What this advanced EMI calculator includes
A basic EMI calculator normally asks for only the loan amount, interest rate and tenure. That is useful for a first estimate, but real loan decisions usually involve more variables. A borrower may pay a processing fee, add extra money every month, make one annual lump-sum payment or face a floating-rate reset after a few years. This calculator keeps those items in one place so the repayment plan can be reviewed as a complete cash-flow estimate.
The main output is the initial EMI. The tool also calculates projected interest, total payments, an estimated payoff month, prepayment savings and the month-by-month outstanding balance. The CSV export is useful when comparing two offers, discussing a prepayment plan with an accountant or keeping a personal loan worksheet. All calculations run in the current browser tab and the page does not ask for a bank login, account number, PAN, OTP or loan application credentials.
How EMI is calculated
For a standard reducing-balance loan, interest is charged on the outstanding principal rather than the original principal for the entire tenure. Each regular instalment contains an interest portion and a principal portion. In the early months, the outstanding balance is high, so the interest portion is usually larger. As principal is repaid, the monthly interest falls and a greater part of the same EMI goes toward principal.
The calculator uses the common annuity formula based on principal, monthly rate and number of instalments. When the annual rate is zero, the principal is divided equally across the selected months. For non-zero rates, the instalment is calculated so the projected balance reaches zero at the end of the schedule, subject to rounding. The table then simulates every month rather than showing only a headline EMI.
How prepayment changes a loan
A prepayment reduces outstanding principal. Because future interest is calculated on a lower balance, the borrower can save interest and may finish the loan earlier. This page accepts both a recurring monthly extra payment and an annual lump-sum amount. The “first prepayment month” controls when the extra plan begins. The monthly extra is then applied every month, while the annual amount repeats every twelve months from that point.
The savings shown here compare the selected prepayment plan with a matching schedule that has the same loan, tenure and optional rate reset but no prepayments. That comparison matters: it avoids presenting an inflated saving that comes from changing several assumptions at once. A lender may have minimum prepayment amounts, notice requirements, charges or product-specific rules. Check the loan agreement before treating the result as an executable payment instruction.
Floating-rate reset scenario
Floating-rate loans can change when the benchmark or contractual spread is reset. The calculator lets you enter the month of a rate change and a new annual rate. You can then choose one of two planning methods. “Recalculate EMI to keep planned tenure” changes the instalment for the remaining months. “Keep EMI and let tenure change” holds the instalment steady and allows the payoff date to move.

Processing fee and GST
The processing fee fields are kept separate from interest because an upfront fee does not reduce principal in the same way an EMI does. The tool calculates the fee as a percentage of the entered loan amount and adds the entered GST rate to that fee. These charges are included in “total outflow” but not in the principal-interest chart. Some lenders charge a fixed amount, deduct the fee from disbursement or include other items such as valuation, documentation, legal review or insurance. Convert a fixed fee into a percentage only when that comparison is meaningful, or set the fee to zero and evaluate charges separately.
Reading the amortization schedule
The monthly schedule shows the instalment number, calendar month, annual rate used in that month, regular EMI, principal component, interest component, prepayment and closing balance. The yearly view groups the same figures into a compact summary. A sudden increase in EMI indicates that the selected rate reset was applied with the recalculate option. A large drop in balance shows an annual or monthly prepayment.
CSV files can be opened in Excel, Google Sheets or other spreadsheet software. Keep in mind that the schedule is an estimate, not an account statement. A bank may calculate interest from the exact disbursement date, post a payment on a different date or round each line differently. The lender’s official statement remains the source for outstanding balance and foreclosure amount.

Important limitations
Do not use an online result as the only basis for borrowing. Confirm affordability after considering income stability, emergency savings, existing liabilities and the possibility of future rate changes. Do not enter confidential banking information into the calculator; none is required. For an existing loan, obtain the latest outstanding principal and current rate from the lender rather than relying on an old sanction amount.
Frequently asked questions
Is the EMI calculation reducing balance or flat rate?
It uses a monthly reducing-balance method. Flat-rate quotations can look cheaper because interest is stated differently. Convert and compare total payments rather than comparing the headline percentage alone.
Should I reduce EMI or reduce tenure after prepayment?
Keeping the EMI and reducing tenure often produces more interest saving, while lowering EMI can improve monthly cash flow. The better choice depends on affordability, lender rules and other financial priorities.
Can the calculator handle a zero-interest loan?
Yes. With a 0% rate, it divides principal across the selected instalments and still applies any entered prepayments.
Why does the final EMI sometimes differ?
The last instalment is capped at the remaining balance plus interest, so it can be smaller than the regular EMI. A rate reset can also change the scheduled EMI.
Does the tool store my loan figures?
The calculator processes the entered figures in the browser. Do not enter account numbers, passwords or identity documents. Standard website analytics and advertising may still operate as described in the Privacy Policy.
